CHARLESTON, S.C. — University of Iowa women’s tennis sophomore Alexa Noel advanced on Thursday to the quarterfinals of the ITA All-American Championships at the LTP Tennis Club.
Noel, ranked No. 12 in the country, defeated No. 20 Valeriya Zeleva of UCF, 6-7(7), 6-2, 6-1, in the Round of 16. Noel will challenge fifth-ranked Georgia Drummy of Duke on Friday at 9:30 a.m. (CT).
“Great win for Alexa today,” said Assistant Coach Danny Leitner. “She had to fight through some challenging situations and kept her composure when the match was on the line. Really proud of the way she competed.”
Noel and Samantha Mannix competed against Penn’s Iuliia Bryzgalova/Marija Curnic in the first round of doubles play. The Hawkeye duo was edged, 9-7. Mannix will travel to compete in the Wildcat Invite Friday through Sunday in Evanston Illinois.
The matches at the Wildcat Invite will be played in a compass draw format over a series of three days, with each team playing three times to move either up or down in their bracket. The matches will be a mix of one doubles set and two singles matches worth one point each. A team will need to earn two out of the three points possible to win and move up as a team. All three matches will be played out.
