Iowa Earns No. 2 Overall Seed; Will Host NCAA First and Second Round Games at Grant Field

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa field hockey team received an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament, it was announced during Sunday’s NCAA Selection Show. The Hawkeyes (16-2) are the No. 2 overall seed where they will host American at Grant Field on Friday, Nov. 12 in Iowa City, Iowa.

It is the first time the Hawkeyes will host an NCAA Tournament game since 1999.

“We are ecstatic to be the No. 2 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament,” said Iowa head coach Lisa Cellucci, the unanimous Big Ten Coach of the Year. “This group proved each week that we were one of the top teams in the country and I am so glad they were rewarded for their hard work.

“There are four outstanding teams coming to Iowa City this weekend and we look forward to a great weekend on Grant Field.”

Northwestern and defending national champion North Carolina will also play in Iowa City on Nov. 12 and the two winners will square off for a spot in the Final Four on Nov. 14.

“The team is stoked to be hosting the first round of the NCAA Tournament,” said senior Maddy Murphy. “This season has been unbelievable with the support from the community, so we’re hoping to get a lot of Hawkeye fans out to Grant Field for the game. We have a lot of hockey left in us and it’s going to be a great match.”

American won the Patriot League regular season and tournament title in 2021 and is 13-3 overall. The Eagles had five All-Patriot League selections in 2021 and Bryn Underwood was selected as the league’s Goalkeeper of the Year. Head coach Steve Jennings is the Patriot League Coach of the Year.

This marks Iowa’s 26th trip to the NCAA Tournament and the fourth straight under Cellucci. The 26 NCAA appearances are the most of any school as a member of the Big Ten Conference. Last season the Hawkeyes advanced to the Final Four for the 12th time in program history.

The Hawkeyes enter NCAA play with a 16-2 record and a Big Ten regular season title.
