Murphy Breaks School Record, Carter Moves Up All-Time List

ONTARIO, Calif. – University of Iowa track and field sophomore Max Murphy broke the 1,500-meter school record (3:40.63) on Friday night at the Bryan Clay Invite in Azusa, California. At the Mt. SAC Relays, junior James Carter, Jr. moved to fifth all-time at Iowa in the long jump (7.81m / 25’7.5”).

Murphy won his heat and bested Jeff Thode’s record set in 2010 by 2.39 seconds.

“James (Carter) had a great day and he was in position to win, which is always good at this meet,” Iowa Director of Track and Field Joey Woody said. “He had a big wind-legal PR jump and a couple of scratches that were near misses that would have been big jumps.”

Seniors Erin Dowd (57.27) and Payton Wensel (57.77) both posted personal-bests in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing third and fourth, respectively. Junior Mariel Bruxvoort nearly ran a personal-best (57.84), and finished seventh.

“Our women’s 400-meter hurdles ran great,” Woody said. “Erin (Dowd) did a great job, setting her rhythm up and really went for it at the end. It was great to see Payton (Wensel) get into the 57-second range. The group is setting things up to go sub-57 in the next couple weeks.”

Sophomore Myreanna Bebe improved her all-time No. 4 mark in the 100-meter hurdles (13.35) to qualify for the final, finishing eighth in a very fast field. Senior Josh Braverman and sophomore Grant Conway made the final in the men’s 110-meter high hurdle, placing eighth and ninth, respectively.

“Myreanna (Bebe) making the final at this meet is fantastic,” Woody said. “She had two great races. Having a head-wind in the final was kind of rough, but all of our hurdlers competed well. We just need to keep advancing these next few weeks.”

A pair of freshmen women’s 400-meter athletes posted lifetime-bests. Chloe Larsen dipped under 55-seconds for the first time in her career (54.87) and Laney Fitzpatrick dipped below 56-seconds for the first time. Freshman Tesa Roberts was the top-finisher for the Hawkeye women, crossing in 20th (54.42).

“Chloe (Larsen) just keeps getting better every week,” Woody said. “It’s exciting to see her take a big step forward and trust the process and training. Laney (Fitzpatrick) is a great competitor and keeps improving each week. It’s exciting to see what those two are doing as freshmen. They will be huge contributors for us in the future.”

In the 200 meters, freshman Khullen Jefferson ran a wind-aided mark of 20.74 to finish ninth in a stacked event.

The Hawkeyes are back in action tomorrow at the Mt. SAC Relays at 11:15 a.m. (CT) and the Beach Invitational at 11 a.m. (CT).
