DALLAS, Texas – Sophomore All-American decathlete Austin West won the decathlon at the Thorpe Cup, representing Team USA in temperatures over 100 degrees on Sunday at St. Mark’s School of Texas.
West (8,062 points) broke the 8,000-point barrier for the second time of his career. He capped his day off with a lifetime-best 1,500-meter run (4:25.03) to clinch the win by a narrow 11-point margin.
West recorded personal-best marks in four of ten events (long jump, 110-meter hurdles, discus, 1500 meters) in the two-day competition. In addition, West picked up three event wins (100 meters, long jump, 400 meters) and clocked a meet-record 400-meter time (46.92).
West’s 8,062-point total is the second-best decathlon total of his career (8,179).
