McClear, Weinberg Set for US Amateur

PARAMUS, N.J. – University of Iowa senior Mac McClear is set to tee off in round one at the 122nd US Amateur on Monday at 1:20 p.m. (CT). McClear will start on the front nine at The Ridgewood Country Club site.

The Hawkeye veteran will play alongside fellow Americans Mitch Davis and Benjamin James as the world’s top amateur talent descends on Paramus, New Jersey. Arcola Country Club will split hosting duties for the field of 312 competitors.

Davis is entering his fifth season at the University of Indiana, where he tied for 14th at the Big Ten Championships last spring. James competes for the University of Virginia.

McClear punched his ticket with a second-place finish at the Persimmon Woods Golf Club qualifying tournament on July 6, shooting seven-under par (135) through 36 holes to finish one stroke back of the medalist. McClear posted a six-under par score of 65 in the second round to clinch one of four qualifying finishes at the event.

A second-team All-Big Ten and PING All-Midwest team selection, McClear led Iowa in stroke average (72.2) through a team-high 33 rounds in 2021-22.

Former Hawkeye Benton Weinberg will also compete in the event. Weinberg is paired with French golfer Quentin Debove of the University of Florida and United States golfer Zach Foushee. Weinberg tied for second at the Worthington Manor qualifying event, finishing six-under par after two rounds to secure one of five bids to final competition.
