COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – University of Iowa redshirt freshman Mia Magnotta has been selected to the 2023 U.S. U-21 Women’s National Team, it was announced Tuesday by USA Field Hockey.
Magnotta earned the invite after taking part in the U-21 Selection Camp from Jan. 4-8 at the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center. She will also take part in the Junior Pan American Championship Selection Camp in February.
“I am so excited and proud of Mia for being selected to the USA U21 National Team,” said Iowa head coach Lisa Cellucci. “She has proven in training every day and in her performance in the NCAA Tournament that she is one of the elite goalkeepers in our country.
“She will gain invaluable experience competing with Team USA and we are excited for her to represent the Hawkeyes on the international stage.”
Magnotta appeared in four games during the 2022 season for the Hawkeyes, where she made 10 saves and combined on a shutout. She was in goal for the duration of the postseason, where she led the team to a shootout win over No. 5 Virginia before losing in a shootout in the Elite Eight at No. 3 Northwestern.
Following the training camp in February, the JPAC traveling team will be announced for the Junior World Cup qualifier in April. The JPAC Selection Camp will take place from Feb. 17-20 at Bessant Field at Queens University of Charlotte in Charlotte, N.C.
From this camp, a squad will be named to represent USA at the 2023 Junior Pan American Championship from April 10-18 in Saint Michael, Barbados, at the Widey Hockey Center.
