BLOOMINGTON, Indiana – The University of Iowa baseball team was defeated, 2-0, by Indiana in a pitchers dual on Saturday afternoon in 10 innings at Bart Kaufman Field.
The Hawkeyes held the Hoosiers to one hit through the first nine innings and three hits on the day but a two-run home run in the bottom of the 10th would prove decisive as Indiana walked it off.
Marcus Morgan got the start for Iowa, striking out seven in five innings of work and allowing just one hit while walking two. Zach Voelker entered and pitched the remaining 4 1/3 innings allowing just two hits including the home run to get tagged with the loss.
“It was a tough loss,” said head coach Rick Heller. “But really pleased with the start that Marcus Morgan gave us, he was outstanding. Then handing the ball to Zach Voelker and he was really good today as well. To hold them to one hit through nine innings was really impressive. A positive sign the last two days with our pitching staff.”
Six different Hawkeyes tallied a hit in the contest, including a pair of doubles from Brennen Dorighi and Cade Moss. The Hawkeye offense struck out 17 times.
“We really hadn’t been in a game like this all season long,” said Heller. “We had way more traffic than they did which wasn’t a lot. Sinnard was really tough on us. We had a few opportunities but unfortunately, we didn’t get the hit.
The Hawkeyes left seven runners on base to Indiana’s four, and the Hawkeyes out hit the Hoosiers 6-3.
“Kind of an off balanced swing that hits the foul pole in the only place the wind would help it,” said Heller. “Not going to let it ruin what I thought was a great day for our pitchers. We battled offensively but didn’t get the job done. Tough loss and we wipe it away and come back tomorrow. If we pitch like that the rest of the year I really like where we are going to be.”
