IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa baseball team defeated Nebraska, 11-6, on Friday night at Duane Banks Field.
The Hawkeyes put up five runs in the second inning, one in the fourth, and five in the seventh to pull away from the Huskers.
“I thought it was great,” said head coach Rick Heller. “They came out and fought hard. I thought our at bats were really good most of the night. We wanted to get Olsons pitch count up and get him out of the game as quick as possible, and we were able to do that. To put the five runs up in the second to give Brody a cushion. Keaton just continues to swing a super-hot at bat.”
Keaton Anthony led the Hawkeyes with a 4-for-4 night including a home run and a double. Anthony had four RBIs on the day.
Raider Tello and Michael Seegers also added two RBIs each, and Cade Moss and Brennen Dorighi each tallied one.
Brody Brecht got the start and threw four innings and faced three batters in the fifth. He allowed four runs on two hits and struck out seven. Jack Whitlock earned the win in relief throwing 2 1/3 innings allowing two hits and striking out five.
“The turning point for me in that game was when Jack Whitlock came in,” said Heller. “Tough situation and minimized the damage and gave us two innings of scoreless work. That was big and at that point in the game it could have gone either way.”
The Hawkeyes drew 10 walks on the day and were hit by two pitches.
“Intense game,” said Heller. “Great crowd, awesome crowd out to support us, and a great way to start the series.”
