IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa gymnast Eva Volpe has been named the Big Ten’s Co-Freshman of the week. It was announced Tuesday by the conference. The honor is Volpe’s first of the season and her career. She shares the award with Natalie Martin from Maryland.
The Pearland, Texas, native earned the distinction after competing in the all-around in all three of Iowa’s meets last week. She brought home the event title on bars against Southern Utah on Jan. 26 posting a 9.850, a new personal best.
Volpe scored a season-best, 39.175, in the all-around against Michigan State on Jan. 28. She also set season highs on vault (9.800) and floor (9.775) against the Spartans. The freshman improved her season-high on the beam to 9.825 against Minnesota on Jan. 22.
The freshman is one of two Hawkeyes who has competed in the all-around event this season. Volpe is the first Hawkeye to earn Big Ten weekly honors this season.
The GymHawks return to action on Sunday Feb. 4 at Xtream Arena in Coralville, Iowa. The Hawkeyes are set to host Nebraska at 1 p.m. (CT) for National Girls and Women in Sports Day. The meet will be streamed on B1G+ (subscription required).
