IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa gymnast Eva Volpe has been named the Big Ten Freshman of the week for the second consecutive week and the third time this season, the announcement was made Tuesday by the conference.
The Pearland, Texas, native earned the distinction after competing in the all-around for the seventh time this season against Ohio State and scored a 39.300. Volpe set a new season-high on floor scoring a 9.875 and helped the Hawkeyes post their season-high on floor with a 49.400.
Volpe started the night with a stuck vault, matching her career-high with a 9.850. She led the way for Iowa on bars posting a team-best on the apparatus, 9.800.
The freshman is the only Hawkeye who has competed in the all-around event at every meet this season. Volpe is the only Hawkeye to earn Big Ten weekly honors this season with this being her third honor of the season.
The GymHawks return to action on Saturday Feb. 25 at they travel to Penn State for the Big Five Meet. Iowa will compete against Illinois, Maryland, Michigan and host Penn State. The meet is set to start at 3:30 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on BTN.
