No. 7 Iowa Falls to Rutgers

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – The seventh-ranked University of Iowa field hockey team fell against Rutgers, 2-2 (3-1 S/O), on Friday at the Bauer Track and Field Complex.

The Hawkeyes and Scarlet Knights played a scoreless first quarter, before Rutgers struck first at the 17:13 mark off a penalty corner. Iowa answered back on their own penalty corner 10 minutes later, with Dionne van Aalsum scoring the first goal of the game for the Hawkeyes, assisted by Milly Short and Annika Herbine. This was van Aalsum’s third goal of the season.

Rutgers retook the lead in the third quarter, scoring at 41:20 off a penalty corner.

In the fourth quarter, Iowa tied the game when Annika Herbine scored a goal for the Hawkeyes at 47:19, her second goal of the season.

The teams remained tied after four quarters and two overtimes, resulting in a shootout.

After Rutgers was unable to find the back of the net on their first attempt, Miranda Jackson was successful for the Hawkeyes.

Olivia Fracticelli answered for Rutgers, tying things up 1-1. Harper Dunne attempted next for Iowa, receiving a second chance shot after her first attempt was obstructed from stick contact by Rutger’s goalie, Sophia Howard. Howard held off Dunne on her second attempt as well. Paulina Niklaus scored next for Rutgers, after scoring both of Rutgers’ goals in regulation play. Sabrina McGroarty missed the next goal for the Hawkeyes, followed by Ava Cickavage missing for Rutgers, leaving the shootout at 2-1. Annika Herbine went next for Iowa, missing her shot. Kara Heck then found the back of the net for Rutgers, winning the shootout, 3-1, and the game.

Rutgers outshot Iowa,18-to-9 and had nine penalty corners to Iowa’s four. Mia Magnotta had three saves for Iowa.

The Hawkeyes continue their trip out East, taking on Villanova on Sunday, September 29 in Conshohocken, PA. The game will be played at the Conshohocken Proving Grounds at 11 a.m. (CT). The game will be streamed on Flo Sports.
