No. 11 Hawkeyes Fall to Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The No. 11 University of Iowa soccer team fell to Minnesota, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium. The Hawkeyes regular season comes to an end at 13-2-3 overall and 8-2-1 in Big Ten conference play.

The Hawkeyes struck fast, scoring 40 seconds into the match to take a 1-0 lead. Graduate student Madison Wilson scored the goal for the Hawkeyes, her first of the season. The goal was assisted by sophomore Sofia Bush, her fourth assist of the season.

Minnesota’s Paige Kalal evened the game up at 1-1 with a goal of her own in the ninth minute.

The Hawkeyes were held to two shots in the first half while Minnesota fired eight shots. Graduate student Macy Enneking had three saves in the first half for Iowa while Minnesota goalkeeper Sarah Martin had one save in the first 45 minutes.

At the break the game remained tied, 1-1.

Minnesota’s Sophia Boman converted on a penalty kick in the 64th minute to give the Gophers a 2-1 advantage. The goal would go on to be the game winning goal for Boman as the Gophers defeated the Hawkeyes, 2-1.

Iowa outshot Minnesota nine to four in the second half and had two corner kicks to their one. Enneking had three saves in the second half for Iowa to finish the game with six.

HAWKEYE NOTABLES
– The Hawkeyes 13 wins in the regular season is the most since 2019 when they won 15 games.
– Iowa has allowed just ten goals so far this season. The current record for least goals allowed in a season is 16 in 2020.
– The Hawkeyes third place finish in the Big Ten ties the best finish in program history. The Hawkeyes also got third in 2019. The last time the Hawkeyes finished top four in the conference was 2021.
– 14 different Hawkeyes have scored goals this season.
90 Tracker: Rielee Fetty, Miah Schueller, and Millie Greer were the three Hawkeye position players to register 90 minutes. 17 Hawkeyes got minutes against the Gophers.
