No. 17 Hawkeyes Travel to Big Ten Tournament

THIS WEEK
The No. 17 University of Iowa soccer team is set to travel to Minneapolis, Minn. to take on Washington on Nov. 2nd at 6:30 p.m. (CT) at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament.

SCOUTING THE HUSKIES
– The Huskies are led by Ioanna Papatheodorou on the offensive side. Papatheodorou leads Washington with eight goals on the season. Papatheodorou has a pair of assists on the season for 18 total points. The senior has 23 shots with 13 on goal (.565). Of her eight goals on the season, five have been game winning goals. Her five game winning goals rank tied for fourth in the Big Ten.
– Washington’s defense has allowed just two second half goals all season, outscoring their opponents sixteen to two in the second half.
– Washington finished their regular season at 10-5-2 and 7-4-0 in the Big Ten, clinching the six seed in their inaugural year in the conference.
– The Huskies have played four ranked opponents this season for a record of 1-3-0 in those matchups. Washington defeated No. 5 Michigan State 2-1.
– Goalkeeper Mia Hamant has allowed just seven goals on the season and posted six shutouts. Hamant has 52 saves for a save percentage of .881.
– Head coach Nicole Van Dyke is in her fifth season at the helm of Washington soccer. Van Dyke previously spent 17 seasons at Cal State Stanislaus.

SERIES HISTORY – WASHINGTON
The Huskies and Hawkeyes first and only matchup came this season on Oct. 17th. The Hawkeyes defeated the nationally ranked Huskies, 1-0, at Iowa Soccer Complex. Berit Parten’s goal in the 35th minute would go on to be the game winning goal for Iowa.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
– Bush, Enneking and Greer were named Big Ten Players to Watch. The Hawkeyes were ranked eighth in the Big Ten Preseason Poll. Enneking is a United Soccer Coaches national preseason honoree and was named to the Mac Hermann Trophy Watch List
– Macy Enneking, Maggie Johnston and graduate-student Rielee Fetty were voted team captains.
– Macy Enneking, Rielee Fetty, and Sofia Bush were named mid-season top 100 players by Top Drawer Soccer. Bush was No. 17, Enneking No. 59, and Fetty No. 68.
– The Hawkeyes are ranked No. 17 by the United Soccer Coaches Poll, No. 16 by Top Drawer Soccer, No. 10 on the NCAA RPI, and were named the No. 6 overall seed in the NCAA D1 Women’s Soccer Committee’s mid-season rankings. The No. 6 overall ranking would put Iowa as a two seed in the tournament.
– A two seed would be the highest seed in program history. The Hawkeyes have made four NCAA tournaments in program history (2013, 2019, 2020, 2023). Iowa is looking to receive back-to-back tournament bids for the first time in school history.
– The Hawkeyes have two NCAA tournament victories in school history with the most recent coming last season when they defeated Bucknell at home, 2-0. The Hawkeyes have not made it past the Round of 32.

LAST WEEK
The Hawkeyes traveled to Minnesota to take on the Golden Gophers where they fell, 1-2, suffering just their second loss of the season. Iowa struck fast scoring 40 seconds into the match to take a 1-0 lead. The goal was scored by Madison Wilson, her first goal of the season. Minnesota’s Paige Kalal evened up the scored at 1-1 with a goal in the ninth minute. Minnesota’s Sophia Boman was then able to convert on a penalty kick int he 64th minute to push the Golden Gopher lead to 2-1. The goal would go on to be the game winning goal. Enneking had six saves for the Hawkeyes.

DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS
– Iowa held a six-game shutout earlier this season, which was a program record for consecutive shutouts.
– The Hawkeyes have shutout four ranked opponents this season, including earlier this season when they shoutout No. 24 Washington.
– Iowa has allowed just ten goals so far this season in 18 games. The current record for least goals allowed in a season is 16 in 2020. The Hawkeyes goals against averages sit at .556 which ranks eighth in the country and trails only UCLA and Washington in the Big Ten.
– Iowa has posted 10 shutouts this season. The program record for most shutouts in a season is 12 set by Macy Enneking in 2023.
– Enneking’s save percentage of .828 ranks fifth in the Big Ten (minimum 10 games played).
– Iowa’s goal differential of 25 is second in the conference, trailing only Michigan State.

A KEEPER!
Macy Enneking has started all five years at Iowa, anchoring the team to two NCAA Tournament appearances and a pair of conference tournament championships.
– Enneking is the first Hawkeye named to the Mac Hermann Trophy Watch List and the first Iowa player featured on the United Soccer Coaches Players to Watch List.
– Enneking has 31.5 career shutouts, passing former Hawkeye Hannah Clark (2012-15), to become the school’s all-time leader in shutouts.
– Enneking is the all-time leader in career victories as a goalkeeper in school history. Enneking has 28.5 career victories.
– Enneking became the first Hawkeye to win Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Week three times in a career and the first Hawkeye to win the award in back-to-back weeks.
– Enneking has 9.5 shutouts on the season which ranks third in the single season record books. Enneking currently holds the number one spot on the record book for most shutouts in a season when she had 12 last season. Enneking needs one shutout to move to second in the single season records and 2.5 to tie her previous record of 12.
– Enneking’s 12.5 victories this season also ranks fourth in the single season record book. Hannah Clark currently leads with 15 victories in 2013.
– The Hilliard, Ohio native has 215 career saves, which ranks fifth all time in school history.

A SPECIAL SEASON
– The Hawkeyes third place finish in the Big Ten regular season ties the best finish in program history. Iowa also finished third in the conference in 2019.
– The Hawkeyes No. 9 ranking earlier this season was the highest ranking in program history.
– At 13-2-3 the Hawkeyes are two wins away from tying the program record for most victories in a season. Iowa win 15 games in 2013 and 2019.
– The Hawkeyes currently have four wins against ranked opponents this season which is a program record. Prior to Coach DiIanni’s arrival in 2014 Iowa had a total of 9 wins against ranked opponents. In DiIanni’s tenure they have 13.
– Iowa’s eight wins in conference is a program record for most wins in the Big Ten regular season.
– 14 different Hawkeyes have scored a goal this season while 13 different players have added an assist this season.
– The Hawkeyes have been ranked every week this season, including the preseason, a program record.
– Iowa is averaging 1, 392 fans in attendance per home game. In their win over Washington there was 1, 893 fans in attendance, a season high.

– Won both Big Ten Tournament Championships in program history (2021, 2023)

HAWKEYES IN THE B1G TEN TOURNAMENT
– Iowa has won two of the last four Big Ten Tournament Championships (2021, 2023).
– The Hawkeyes defeated Illinois, Minnesota, Penn State and Wisconsin in 2021 to earn the programs first Big ten Tournament title.
– Last season Iowa qualified for the tournament as the eight seed. Iowa downed No. 12 Michigan State, No. 5 Penn State, and No. 12 Wisconsin to become the first eight seed in league history to win the Big Ten Championship.
– Iowa is looking to become the first back-to-back Big Ten Tournament champion since Penn State in 2000 and 2001.
– The Hawkeyes are one of seven teams in the conference to win multiple Big Ten Championships.
– Iowa posts an all-time record of 11-11 in the Big Ten Tournament. The Hawkeyes have qualified for 10 Big Ten Tournaments.

FRESHMAN SENSATION
– Berit Parten was named a mid-season top 100 freshman by Top Drawer Soccer. Parten was ranked No. 26 on the list. Parten leads Iowa in goals (7), shots (43), shots on goal (21), and game winning goals (3).
– Parten was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week last week after her game winning goal against No. 24 Washington and her two assists against Oregon.
– Parten also won the award the first week of September. Parten was the 12th Hawkeye to be named Freshman of the Week and the first Hawkeye to win the award since Kenzie Roling in 2021.
– Parten joins Cloe Lacasee (2011) and Hannah Clark (2012) as the only Hawkeye to win the award twice.
– Parten is one of two Big Ten freshman to win the award twice this season (Shaela Bradley, Rutgers).

2 FOR THE MONEY
Iowa’s record is 54-2-3 in its last 59 games when scoring two goals or more, which dates back to October of 2017. The Hawkeyes are 11-0 this year in multi-goal games.

UP NEXT
The winner of the matchup between Washington and Iowa will go on to face the winner of UCLA and either Penn State or Minnesota. If the Hawkeyes defeat the Huskies, their next match will be Nov. 7th at 4:30 p.m. (CT). in St. Louis. The match will be televised live on Big Ten Network.
