IOWA CITY, Iowa – Five University of Iowa field hockey student-athletes – junior Milly Short, sophomore Dionne van Aalsum, sophomore Gia Whalen, freshman Sabrina McGroarty, and senior Mia Magnotta – earned Big Ten Conference recognition for the 2024 season, it was announced Wednesday by the league office.
Short was named to the All-Big second team after a season of impressive defense for the Hawkeyes, playing a roll in eight shutouts. The Worcester, England native started every game and has a goal and two assists.
Van Aalsum was recognized on the All-Big second team after being named freshman of the year last season. The Castricum, Netherlands native played in every game and has nine goals and one assist.
Whalen was listed as an All-Big second team selection after holding down the midfield. The Paoli, Pennsylvania native played in every game and has registered two goals so far.
McGroarty was named to the all-freshman team after playing a big role in the Hawkeye defense that registered eight shutouts. The Mickleton, New Jersey, native started every game and tallied an assist.
Magnotta was Iowa’s recipient for the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award. The distinction is presented to student-athletes who display sportsmanship and ethical behavior, are in good academic standing, and demonstrate good citizenship outside of athletics. The Forty-Fort, Pennsylvania native started every game and has allowed 23 goals while tallying 71 saves so far.
No. 16 Iowa opens postseason play on Thursday, facing No. 5 Maryland at 1 p.m. (CT) in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Big Ten Tournament hosted in College Park, Maryland.
