Hayashida Advances in ITA Consolation Singles

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The University of Iowa women’s tennis team completed day two of the ITA Sectional Championships on Friday at the Varsity Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Michigan.

In the Round of 16 in singles, the Hawkeyes’ Tereza Dejnozkova dropped a straight set decision to Houston’s Santa Strombacha, 6-4, 6-0. Dejnozkova will play an “extra match” on Saturday against an opponent to be determined.

Iowa went 1-1 on the day in the consolation singles bracket. Junior Daianne Hayashida won in straight sets over Michigan’s Reese Miller, 7-5, 6-4. Senior Marisa Schmidt opened her match with a victory in the first set before falling to Ohio State’s Teah Chavez, 4-6, 7-5, 10-4.

Hayashida will continue play Saturday, facing TCU’s Jade Otway in the consolation quarterfinals.

In doubles, Hayashida and Schmidt had their tournament come to a close, falling to Ohio State’s Luciana Perry and Audrey Spencer, 6-3, 6-4.

“This has been another great day of competitive matches against several strong opponents,” said head coach Sasha Boros Schmid. “I’m happy for Dai to get a quality win today and she’s looking forward to advancing and playing another strong opponent tomorrow.”
