No. 17 Hawkeyes Fall to Washington in PK’s

The No. 17 University of Iowa’s soccer team tied Washington, 0-0, before falling 4-5 in PK’s on Saturday night at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament.

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The No. 17 University of Iowa’s soccer team tied Washington, 0-0, before falling 4-5 in PK’s on Saturday night at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament.

Sophomore Sofia Bush fired all three shots on goal in the first half for the Hawkeyes. Bush was recently named Third-Team All-Big Ten. The Hawkeyes had two corner kicks while Washington had one in the first 45 minutes.

Graduate student Macy Enneking had two saves in the first half for Iowa while Washington goalkeeper Mia Hamant had three saves in the first half for the Huskies. Both teams fired seven shots in the first 45 minutes as at the break the score was 0-0.

Both offenses picked up in the second half as Washington had 10 shots while Iowa had eight in the second 45. Hamant had seven saves in the second half for Iowa while Enneking had three for the Hawkeyes.

Both teams had five corner kicks a piece but couldn’t convert as the game headed to OT with the score still tied, 0-0.

The Hawkeyes and Huskies were both able to score in overtime as the match headed to double overtime. The game then stayed 0-0 throughout double overtime and headed to a penalty kick shootout, the first penalty kick shootout of the Big Ten Tournament.

After the penalty kick shootout, the match remained tied with both teams converting on four of five penalty kicks. The match then headed to a sudden death penalty kick shootout. In sudden death Iowa was able to save Washingtons attempt and then Berit Parten’s attempt was also saved. Washington was able to convert on their next penalty kick and Miah Schueller’s attempt was saved. The Huskies advance off penalty kicks.

HAWKEYE NOTABLES
-The overtime format is two-10-minute periods followed by a penalty kick shootout if both teams are unable to score. Overtime is played as sudden death.
– The match ended in an even draw but due to Washington making a penalty kick in sudden death before saving Iowa’s attempt they advance in the Big Ten Tournament.
90 Tracker: Due to the game going to double overtime multiple Hawkeyes played over 90 minutes. Sofia Bush, Rielee Fetty, Eva Pattison, Miah Schueller, and Millie Greer were the five Hawkeye position players to play over 90 minutes.

The Hawkeyes are expected to receive an at large bid to the NCAA Tournament. The selection show is Nov. 11th at 3:00 p.m. (CT) where the Hawkeyes will learn their next opponent.
