IOWA CITY, Iowa – Pat McGhee, former standout Hawkeye track athlete and assistant coach, passed away on November 23. McGhee was 58.

A celebration of Pat’s life will be held on January 11, 2025, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at 730 N. Gillette Avenue in Aurora, Illinois.

At Iowa, McGhee earned all-America honors in 1988 and 1989, placing second at the NCAA Championships in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles and tying for fifth in the 110-high hurdles in 1989. He won both events at the 1989 Big Ten meet, earning conference Athlete of the Year and Athlete of the Meet honors. While he was competing, McGhee was ranked as high as 10th in the world in the 400-meter hurdles. McGhee competed in the European circuit as a post-collegiate athlete.

McGhee served as an assistant for 15 years at Iowa from 1991-2006. McGhee oversaw the hurdling, jumps and sprints groups, but was involved in all facets of the squad. McGhee trained 25 all-Americans and 39 Big Ten champions at Iowa.

“The Hawkeye Track and Field community lost an all-time great this past weekend,” director of Iowa track and field Joey Woody said. “Pat was a phenomenal athlete and mentored many Hawkeyes throughout his career as a coach at Iowa. Our thoughts and prayers are with Pat and his family.”
