LOS ANGELES - The University of Iowa men’s basketball team fell to USC, 99-89, on Tuesday night at Galen Center. The Hawkeyes move to 12-5 on the season and 3-3 in Big Ten play.
The Trojans got off to a hot start offensively, building an early lead in the first half. The Hawkeyes trailed USC for the majority of the first 20 minutes as the Trojans were efficient from beyond the arc. USC used a 7-0 run to add to its lead prior to the half to take a 48-32 lead into the break.
At half, Iowa was shooting 13-of-28 (46.4 percent) from the field and 4-of-10 (40 percent) from deep. Sophomore Owen Freeman led the Hawkeyes offensively in the first 20 minutes, scoring 13 points on an efficient 6-of-7 from the field, including 1-of-1 from beyond the arc. After 20 minutes the Trojans shot 19-of-31 (61.3 percent) from the field and 7-of-11 (63.6 percent) from deep. Iowa was outrebounded, 20-11, in the first half.
USC would maintain its lead for the first 10 minutes of the half, making nine straight field goals to grab its biggest lead of the game, 75-56, with just under 11 minutes remaining. The Hawkeyes refused to go away and kept chipping away at the deficit, before they would cut the USC lead to just five, 83-78, with just over five minutes remaining.
The Trojans weathered the storm and knocked down free throws late to protect their lead.
Iowa finished the game shooting 32-of-60 (53.3 percent) from the field and 11-of-24 (45.8 percent) from 3-point range. After struggling from the charity stripe in the first half, Iowa would finish 14-of-19 (73.7 percent) from the free throw line.
Freeman led Iowa with 23 points, a career high, to go along with a team-high six rebounds. Senior Payton Sandfort scored 20 points, including 15 in the second half. Graduate Drew Thelwell added 16 points, while junior Josh Dix rounded out the Hawkeyes in double digits with 13 points.
The Trojans shot 37-of-57 (64.9 percent) from the field and 10-of-15 (66.7 percent) from deep. USC converted on 15-of-25 (60 percent) from the free throw line. The Trojans were led by Desmond Claude and Saint Thomas as the duo combined to score 49 points.
