Huskers Hang On in Overtime to Beat Hawkeyes

The Iowa women’s basketball team fell to Nebraska, 87-84, in overtime inside a sold-out Carver Hawkeye Arena on Thursday night.

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Iowa women’s basketball team fell to Nebraska, 87-84, in overtime inside a sold-out Carver Hawkeye Arena on Thursday night.

The Hawkeyes were led by junior Hannah Stuelke, who recorded her fifth double-double this season with 16 points and 16 rebounds. Freshman Aaliyah Guyton made a career-high 14 points, while senior Lucy Olsen also tallied 14 points. Senior Kylie Feuerbach contributed 13 points, including a pair of three-pointers.

Iowa went on a 9-0 run in the midst of the first quarter to take a six-point lead. Nebraska responded by hitting six three-pointers, four of which came in less than two minutes, to close out the first 10 minutes with a 26-19 lead. Feuerbach led the quarter for the Hawkeyes with two threes and eight points. The first 10 minutes featured three ties and two lead changes.

The Hawkeyes took control of the second quarter, outscoring the Huskers, 18-12. Feuerbach's steal resulting in a three-pointer by Guyton brought the Hawkeyes back within one despite trailing by as much as 10 with 8:27 to go before the break. Stuelke contributed seven points in the quarter to help the Hawkeyes go into halftime trailing by one, 37-38.

Out of the half, senior Sydney Affolter made a layup in the first possession to regain the Hawkeyes' lead. It was a back-and-forth battle, but the Hawkeyes were able to take control at the end of the quarter by going on a 7-2 run. Addi O’Grady and Guyton led the surge with six points each in the quarter helping the Hawkeyes to a 56-51 lead going into the final stretch.

Iowa held control through the entirety of the fourth quarter led by Olsen with eight points. With 50 seconds left, the Huskers downed their 13th three to tie the game. The Hawkeyes were able to regain a two-point lead, but Nebraska freshman Britt Prince downed two free throws to send the game into overtime.

In overtime, Nebraska took an early lead with free throws and maintained it throughout. Despite a strong effort from the Hawkeyes, including four straight points from O’Grady, Nebraska's Logan Nissley sealed the game with crucial free throws in the final seconds, leading to a victory for the Huskers.

POSTGAME NOTES
- Hannah Stuelke recorded her eighth career double-double which ties for Monika Czinano and Ally Disterhoff for ninth-most in program history since 2009.

- Stuelke set a new-career-high with 15 rebounds.
- Stuelke became the eighth Hawkeye to record 15 or more rebounds in Carver-Hawkeye Arena since 2009.
- It was Stuelke’s fifth double-double of the season which is a career-high and team-high for the season.
- Stuelke has 50 career games with 10+ points which is fifth-most in program history since 2020.
- Stuelke became the sixth Hawkeye to record 15+ points and 15+ rebounds in a single game since 2009.
- The last time a Hawkeye had 15 or more rebounds was Caitlin Clark against Loyola-Chicago on Dec. 21, 2023.
- Freshman Taylor Stremlow set a new career-high with six assists.
- Stremlow has recorded five or more assists three times this season which ties for sixth-most as a freshman in a single season since 2009. (Alexa Kastanek and Whitney Jennings)
- Freshman Aaliyah Guyton netted a career-high 14 points.
- Guyton has reached double figures twice in her career.
- Sydney Affolter grabbed double digit rebounds for the second time this year.
- It was Affolter’s third career double-double.
- Kylie Feuerbach reached double figures for the fourth time this season and for the second time against a Big Ten opponent.
- Lucy Olsen tied Stremlow with a team-best six assists.
- Taylor McCabe made her third start of the season.
- Iowa tried its third different starting lineup in as many games.
- The Hawkeyes have outrebounded 16 of their 18 opponents this season.
- The Hawkeyes have played in front of 30 consecutive sell outs at home, the longest streak nationally.
- It was Iowa’s first overtime game since Ohio State on Jan. 21, 2024.
- Jan Jensen has coached 800 games at the University of Iowa as an assistant and head coach which is a program record.
