IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa women’s basketball team downed Northwestern, 85-80, on Tuesday night inside a sold-out Carver Hawkeye Arena.
Junior Hannah Stuelke led the Hawkeyes scoring a career-high 26 points with 10 field goals and a perfect 6 for 6 from the free-throw line. Senior Lucy Olsen followed with 16 points, and freshman Aaliyah Guyton contributed 15 points, including three three-pointers. Senior Sydney Affolter added 13 points highlighted by three three-pointers.
Northwestern came out strong, shooting 4-for-5 from three-point range, which put Iowa down by as much as 10 points early on. However, the Hawkeyes fought back with a 7-0 run to bring the game within three points. Guyton hit a three-pointer at the buzzer, ending the quarter with Iowa trailing 20-23.
The Wildcats started the second quarter with two quick baskets, but Iowa responded with a 9-0 run to take their first lead of the game at 29-27. Although Northwestern briefly regained the lead, the Hawkeyes maintained control for the rest of the quarter. Stuelke scored three straight points in the final minute, sending Iowa into halftime with a 41-38 lead.
The Hawkeyes held their lead through the third quarter. Guyton sunk two threes, and Affolter led the quarter with five points, including a fast break three after a quick rebound from Taylor McCabe. The Hawkeyes outscored the Wildcats by three in the third to go into the final quarter with a 62-56 lead.
The final quarter saw both teams trading baskets, but Iowa managed to hold onto their lead. Northwestern hit two threes in the final minute of the game, but six free throws and a strong defensive effort in the closing minutes secured the victory for the Hawkeyes.
