IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The nationally ranked University of Iowa women’s basketball team came up short against No. 8 Maryland, 74-66, in the top-25 matchup on Sunday afternoon inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
The Hawkeyes were led by senior Lucy Olsen with 19 points, four threes, and four steals. Sydney Affolter followed with 12 points and eight rebounds, while senior Addi O’Grady contributed nine points and five rebounds.
Maryland came out strong, quickly taking control by hitting five three-pointers and building a lead of up to 13 points in the first quarter. However, the Hawkeyes found their rhythm late in the period, closing with a 7-0 run to cut into the deficit. Despite the run, the Terrapins held a 22-15 lead after the opening quarter.
In the second quarter, Maryland continued to dominate, outscoring the Hawkeyes 26-12. Maryland held Iowa to just three field goals compared to their nine in the quarter. By halftime, the Terrapins had built a commanding, 48-27 lead.
Coming out of halftime, Iowa opened with a 12-3 scoring run cutting Maryland's lead to 12 points. Affolter and Olsen hit back-to-back 3-pointers during the run to fuel the momentum. Despite Iowa’s push, Maryland regained control and ended the quarter with a 59-43 advantage.
O’Grady started off the fourth quarter with a quick basket, followed by a three from Olsen. The Hawkeyes managed to get the game within single digits, cutting the lead to five with 4:42 remaining holding the Terrapins to just four points through the first six minutes of the quarter. However, Maryland went on a run to extend its lead back to 11 which sparked another Iowa rally. The Hawkeyes cut the deficit to five with 45 seconds left due to the three by freshman Aaliyah Guyton but ultimately fell short despite outscoring the Terrapins, 23-15 in the final quarter.
