RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – The University of Iowa men’s golf team opened their spring season at the Puerto Rico Classic on Monday. The Hawkeyes finished the first round tied for 13th place.
Max Tjoa and Josh Lundmark led the way for Iowa shooting even par (72) to sit in a tie for 44th place. They each recorded four birdies with Lundmark carding three in a row on the back nine to finish two under on that stretch. Tjoa and Lundmark also ranked among the best on par 3 tying for eighth with an average score of 2.75, one under par.
Gage Messingham posted a round of 74 (+2) standing in 58th place, carding an even-par back nine. Ryan Shellberg and Chance Rinkol finished the first round tied for 76th place at 76 (+4). Rinkol highlighted his round with three birdies.
Iowa is tied for the second-best score on par 3s, averaging 2.95 with a score of one under par. The Hawkeyes currently sit ahead of fellow Big Ten team, Wisconsin, and are tied with RV Ohio State.
Ian Meyer competed individually for the Hawkeyes posting a round of 74 playing even on the front nine.
