IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Iowa women’s basketball team fell to No. 8 Ohio State, 86-78, in overtime inside the Schottenstein Center on Monday afternoon. The Buckeyes snapped a six-game win streak for the Hawkeyes.
Senior Lucy Olsen led Iowa with 27 points, including three 3-pointers, and added seven assists. Senior Sydney Affolter followed with 11 points and 15 rebounds, registering her seventh career double-double and fifth of the season. Kylie Feuerbach contributed 12 points, including two three-pointers, while junior Hannah Stuelke added 10 points.
The Buckeyes managed to take an early lead knocking down four threes in the first quarter to build a 10-point lead, with the Cambridge sisters combining for 15 of their 22 first-quarter points. Olsen paced the Hawkeyes with five points to help keep them within reach, but Ohio State closed the quarter ahead 22-12. The Hawkeyes held a 20-18 rebounding edge at halftime, led by Affolter with seven boards and freshman Teagan Mallegni with six. However, Ohio State outscored Iowa 12-9 in the second quarter to take a 34-21 lead into the break.
Iowa came out of halftime outscoring Ohio State, 23-17 in the third. Affolter contributed eight points, including a three-pointer, while Stuelke and Olsen added four points apiece. Iowa went on an early 13-3 run in the quarter, and to close out the third, Iowa had narrowed the gap to 51-44.
In the fourth quarter, Iowa outscored the Buckeyes, 30-23. Feuerbach added two threes early to bring the score within three. Ohio State went on a 6-0 run to regain some lead and went up by as much as 12 with 1:38 to play. Freshman Aaliyah Guyton added a three-pointer, followed by three back-to-back-to-back threes from Olsen in the final minute of regulation. A steal from Stuelke followed by an and-one from Affolter brought the Hawkeyes within one. In the final three seconds of regulation, Olsen hit two free throws to send the game into overtime tied at 74.
