IOWA CITY, Iowa -- University of Iowa student-athletes Ryan Johnson (men’s track and field) and Lucy Olsen (women’s basketball) were named January’s Student-Athletes of the Month, the Iowa Student-Athlete Advisory Committee announced.

Johnson, a sophomore from Springboro, Ohio, dominated his debut in the Black and Gold. At the Hawkeye Invitational, he topped Iowa’s all-time list with his first throw of 23.57 meters. He improved that mark twice more in his series. On his final throw, Johnson reached a 24.00-meter mark, climbing to the top of the national rankings. His performance set the school, meet and facility record, finishing January with the third-best throw in the NCAA. He is one of three throwers in the NCAA to hit the 24.00-meter mark.

Olsen, a senior from Collegeville, Pennsylvania, has been a standout leader for the Iowa women’s basketball team this season. She recorded double figures in seven of the last 10 games, with 13 career games totaling 10+ points, over five assists and over five rebounds. In the game against Northwestern, Olsen posted 16 points, six assists and five rebounds. In the matchup against Washington, she registered 13 points in the first half, shooting a perfect five-of-five from the field, including three deep treys. That game marked Olsen’s seventh career game with four or more three pointers. She finished the game shooting perfect from the field with a total of 20 points.
