IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa baseball team defeated Michigan State via run rule, 10-0, in seven innings on Saturday afternoon at Duane Banks Field. Iowa has won back-to-back Big Ten series to open conference play.
The Hawkeyes used a big first two innings to set the tone plating 10 runs while the pitchers and defense held the Spartans scoreless for Iowa’s fourth shutout of the season.
“We talked before the game that it was really important to come out with a lot of energy after the extra inning game and then another nine innings,” said head coach Rick Heller.
“That’s a long day and sometimes you see teams come out flat and lethargic, especially when you are playing a lot of the guys that played yesterday which was our situation today. We talked about showing some toughness. Pride, taking care of our home field and finding a way to get it done. It was a get it done day, it was it takes what it takes day. Let’s get it done and get after them right away. You couldn’t have drawn it up any better.”
Reece Beuter improved to 3-0 on the season with five innings of shutout ball. Beuter struck out a career-high eight batters while allowing four hits and three walks. Twice the redshirt senior worked out of bases loaded jams to keep the Spartans scoreless.
Tyler Guerin worked a scoreless inning before Brandt Hogue closed out the game with a scoreless inning of his own.
Three Hawkeyes tallied multi-hit days as Jackson Beaman, Gable Mitchell and Ben Swails each had two hits. Beaman, Swails and Jaixen Frost each plated two RBIs.
Miles Risley added three RBIs on a bases clearing triple to go along with a highlight reel catch at the wall in centerfield.
Iowa hit .583 (7-for-12) with runners in scoring position and .571 (8-for-14) with runners on base. A four run first inning and a six run second as Iowa batted around would be more than enough offense to take the series.
