IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa women’s basketball team defeated Wisconsin, 81-66, on Sunday afternoon inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena in the regular-season finale. The Hawkeyes improve to 20-9 on the season and 10-8 in conference play.
Senior Lucy Olsen led all scorers with 22 points on 9-of-16 shooting. Junior Hannah Stuelke added a double-double, finishing with 21 points and 15 rebounds. Stuelke also dished out three assists and finished with four steals, tying a career high. Senior’s Sydney Affolter and Addison O’Grady rounded out Hawkeyes in double digits with 10 points apiece.
The Hawkeyes opened the game on a 10-2 spurt, as they knocked down four of their six field goal attempts in the opening minutes. The Badgers responded with a 9-2 run of their own to bring the game back within just one point. Wisconsin would go on to take the lead, 21-20 and protect that lead for the rest of the quarter as after 10 minutes the Hawkeyes trailed the Badgers by one. Olsen co-led all scorers with nine first quarter points.
The second quarter was all Stuelke. Stuelke converted on an and-one layup to give the Hawkeyes the lead back, 23-21, recording the team’s first points in 4:30. The Cedar Rapids, Iowa native scored or assisted on 13 straight Iowa points to give the Hawkeyes a 34-29 advantage. A three-pointer from Wisconsin’s Tess Myers at the buzzer would tie the game, 36-36, at the half. Myers shot 2-of-2 from beyond the arc in the second quarter. Stuelke’s second quarter stat line included nine points, 3-of-4 from the field, 3-of-3 from the charity stripe, four rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
