NORMAN, Okla. – The sixth-seeded University of Iowa women’s basketball team fell to third-seeded Oklahoma, 96-62, in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Monday afternoon in Lloyd Noble Center. The Hawkeyes season comes to a close at 23-11 overall.
The Hawkeyes opened the game on a 10-4 spurt, as senior Kylie Feuerbach knocked down a pair of three-pointers in the opening minutes. The Iowa defense forced four Oklahoma turnovers in their first eight possessions. The Sooners would then end the first quarter on a 16-1 run, forcing eight Hawkeye turnovers and not allowing a field goal for nearly seven minutes. After one quarter, Iowa trailed Oklahoma, 20-11.
Senior Lucy Olsen led the way for the Hawkeyes in the second quarter, scoring 13 of the 16 second quarter points. Olsen shot 5-of-6 from the field including 3-of-3 from beyond the arc. Iowa was able to cut the deficit to eight a few times but was never able to cut into the lead any further. The Sooners outrebounded the Hawkeyes 20-13 in the second quarter as after 20 minutes Iowa trailed Oklahoma, 38-27. Oklahoma shot just 7-of-28 from the field and 2-of-14 from deep in the second quarter.
Junior Hannah Stuelke got the scoring started in the third with a layup to cut the deficit to nine before the Sooners would respond with a run. Stuelke led Iowa with six third quarter points whole also dishing out two assists. The Hawkeyes forced six Oklahoma turnovers in the third quarter and turned them into seven points. After thirty minutes, Iowa trailed Oklahoma, 68-43.
Seven different Hawkeyes scored in the fourth quarter as the Oklahoma lead stretched out. Senior AJ Ediger led Iowa with four points on 2-of-3 shooting in the final quarter. The Hawkeyes knocked down 3-of-7 from beyond the arc and 7-of-17 from the field.
The Hawkeyes shot 24-of-66 (36.4 percent) from the field and 10-of-25 (40 percent) from deep before the game. Iowa shot 4-of-7 (57.1 percent) from the charity stipe. Iowa was outrebounded, 64-33.
Olsen led Iowa with 20 points, netting four three-pointers and grabbing five rebounds. Feuerbach tied a season-high 14 points while also tying a career high, with four made three-pointers. Feuerbach pulled in six rebounds. Stuelke rounded out the Hawkeyes in double digits with 10 points and four rebounds. Senior Sydney Affolter grabbed a team high nine rebounds while also leading the team with five assists.
