THE FIELD
Iowa is set to compete against a strong field that includes seven ranked opponents: No. 6 LSU, No. 8 Virginia, No. 12 Florida, No. 15 UCLA, No. 37 Louisville, No. 38 Purdue, and No. 45 Wake Forest, along with Miami (OH).
- This marks Iowa’s third matchup against Purdue this spring, having previously faced them at The Hootie and the Puerto Rico Classic.
- Defending champion Florida looks to retain its title.
TOURNAMENT HISTORY
This will be the fifth consecutive year of the Hawkeyes hosting the Calusa Cup at Calusa Pines Golf Club.
- Iowa's best team finish in Naples is seventh in 2023 and 2021.
- In 2021, Alex Schaake tied for fifth place shooting 215 (-1). Schaake closed out play with a third-round 67 (-5) to place ahead of two top-10 ranked golfers. In 2023, Noah Kent was the low scorer for Iowa at 2-over par (71/73/74) tying for 9th.
HURDZAN-FRY TIES
Calusa Pines was designed by Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry, a design partnership behind many elite courses across the United States, and particularly the Midwest. US Open site Erin Hills in Erin, Wisconsin, is another notable Hurdzan-Fry collaboration. Fry's firm also designed the new McCarty Short Game Facility at Iowa's Hoak Family Golf Complex in Iowa City.
THE COURSE
Calusa Pines distinguishes itself from its brethren because it goes to excess, some would say; but in such a subtle way that it becomes memorable. Named among the prestigious "Top Ten Best New Private Clubs" in the United States according to Golf Digest, Calusa Pines features outstanding vistas generated by sweeping ridges that influences ten golf holes. The landforms are so soft and flowing that they blend in well enough to appear natural and unique. Combined with extensive native plant vegetation it is difficult to imagine the golf course was built, instead of simply laid out on this superb piece of land.
THE RETURNERS
- Max Toja recorded his best finish of the season at The Hootie, placing 9th, highlighted by a career-low round of 67 in the third round. He also earned top-25 finishes at the Gopher Invite (17th) and the Colleton River Collegiate (17th). Additionally, Toja placed in the top 25 at the Purdue Invite (24th).
- Since transferring from Cornell in 2023, John Lundmark has started in 14 meets for the Hawkeyes. He posted a season-low 69 in the final round of the Fallen Oak Intercollegiate and matched that score in the final round of the Puredo Rico Classic, where he finished tied for 27th after shooting four under par for the tournament.
- Gage Messingham opened the season strong with a ninth-place finish at the Gopher Invite and followed up with a top-25 performance at both the Purdue Invite and Colleton River Collegiate. He carded a season-low 69 in the first round of the Notre Dame Invite.
