NAPLES, Florida – The University of Iowa men’s golf team opened play at the fifth annual Calusa Cup at Calusa Pines Golf Club on Sunday. The Hawkeyes finished the first round 10-over-par and tied for sixth place.
The Hawkeyes hold a three-stroke lead over No. 6 LSU and are four strokes ahead of No. 8 Virginia. Iowa leads the field on par-3 holes with an average score of 3.20 and ranks second in total birdies with 17 behind No. 27 Louisville.
Freshman Ryan Shellberg led the first round for the Hawkeyes, tying his season low with a one-under-par 71 to finish tied for sixth. The Prosper, Texas native carded back-to-back birdies on the front nine to shoot one-under, finishing the day with five birdies overall. Shellberg leads the field in par-3 scoring, averaging 2.75.
Senior Ian Meyer and junior Gage Messingham wrapped up day one tied for 20th with a three-over-par 75. Meyer tallied three birdies on the front nine, including back-to-back birdies on holes two and three, to finish the front nine at one-under. Messingham recorded three birdies on the day, shooting one-over before the turn and two-over on the back nine. Messingham leads the field in par-5 scoring with an average of 4.25.
Freshman Chance Rinkol carded a five-over-par 77 to finish tied for 34th after the opening round. The Leawood, Kansas native recorded five birdies, tied for the most on the team, including four on the back nine. Sophomore Max Tjoa rounded out the day for the Hawkeyes with a nine-over-par 81.
