Hawkeyes Finish Round 2 at Calusa Pines

The Iowa men’s golf team continued play at the fifth annual Calusa Cup at Calusa Pines Golf Club on Monday afternoon.

NAPLES, Florida – The University of Iowa men’s golf team continued play at the fifth annual Calusa Cup at Calusa Pines Golf Club on Monday afternoon. The Hawkeyes finished the second round 12-over-par concluding the day in seventh place.

Junior Gage Messingham led the Hawkeyes in the second round, firing an even-par 72 to move into a tie for 17th. He carded three birdies on the day, including two on the front nine, where he finished one-under. Messingham sits at three-over par through two rounds.

Freshman Ryan Shellberg closed out the round with a two-over-par 74, maintaining his position inside the top 10 in tied for eighth place. The Prosper, Texas, native recorded two birdies on the front nine to make the turn at even par. Shellberg leads the Hawkeyes with the lowest two-day total at one-over-par.

Sophomore Max Tjoa capped off the second round with a three-over-par 75. The Cedar Falls, Iowa, native sank three birdies on the front nine and was one-under through the first 12 holes. He sits at 12-over-par for the tournament.

Senior Ian Meyer and freshman Chance Rinkol each carded a seven-over-par 79 in the second round. Meyer stands at 10-over-par through two rounds, while Rinkol follows with a two-day total of 12-over-par.

The Hawkeyes hold an eight-stroke lead over No. 8 Virginia and Miami (OH). Iowa ranks second in par-3 scoring with an average of 3.25 and also sits second in par-5 scoring with a 4.78 average. Both Messingham and Shellberg are tied for second in par-3 scoring playing them at even par, and they also share the second-best average on par 5s at 4.5.
