CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - University of Iowa junior Gage Messingham has advanced to the final stage of qualifying for the 125th U.S. Open after carding a three-under-par 69 during local qualifying on Monday at Cedar Rapids Country Club.
Messingham, a native of Arvada, Colorado, recorded seven birdies over 18 holes to earn one of the qualifying spots. He now moves on to Final Qualifying, a 36-hole test scheduled at sites across the globe, including 10 in the United States, with events beginning May 19.
The Hawkeye junior posted a season stroke average of 72.21 ranking 11th in program history since 1991–92. He recorded three rounds of 67 during the year, tied for 51st on Iowa’s all-time 18-hole leaderboard, and closed the spring season with a seventh-place finish at the Hawkeye Invite.
Former Hawkeye standout Matthew Walker also advanced out of local qualifying, shooting a two-under-par 70. Walker holds Iowa’s all-time best 54-hole score with a 199 (-14) and carded a career-low 66 (-5) at the Hawkeye Invitational during his collegiate career.
Sean McCarty, father of Iowa freshman Jack McCarty, also qualified with a one-under 71. McCarty was the 1992 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, a two-time All-Big Ten selection, and was inducted into the National Iowa Varsity Club Hall of Fame in 2016. Mac McClear, another Iowa Alum, is listed as an alternate after firing an even-par 72.
Players who advance from Final Qualifying will earn a spot in the 2025 U.S. Open Championship, set for June 12–15 at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania.
