IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa soccer freshman Liana Tarasco was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week, the Big Ten conference announced on Tuesday.
Tarasco earns the award after netting her first career goal in Iowa’s, 3-2, victory over No. 6 Arkansas last week. Tarasco was awarded a penalty kick after a handball was called and then scored off a deflection. The true freshman’s goal in the seventh minute gave the Hawkeyes an, 1-0, lead. Iowa would hold the lead for the rest of the game.
Tarasco becomes the first Hawkeye to win the award since Berit Parten, who did it twice last season. The Montreal, Canada native becomes the sixth player in head coach Dave DiIanni’s tenure and the 10th Hawkeye in program history to win the award.
Tarasco was named a Big Ten Player to watch this season after spending time on the Canadian National Team.
No. 7 Iowa is back in action Thursday night when they host No. 16 TCU in their season opener. The match is set to kick off at 7:30 p.m. (CT) and will broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
