Hawkeyes Travel to Loyola-Chicago, Host Saint Louis

The No. 8 University of Iowa women’s soccer team travels to Chicago, Ill. where they take on Loyola-Chicago on Thursday, Aug. 28 at 7 p.m. (CT). The Hawkeyes then return home to host Saint Louis for the team’s senior day at 1 p.m. (CT).

SCOUTING THE RAMBLERS
- Loyola-Chicago is 2-1-0 on the season, coming in on a two-game shutout streak. The Ramblers picked up road wins at Central Michigan, 1-0, and at DePaul, 2-0. The Ramblers lost their season opener to Northwestern, 2-0.
- Maggie Schmidt and Abby Sudkamp lead the Ramblers with one goal apiece. Zoe Hevey is Loyola-Chicago’s leading shots getter with 14 shots on the season, putting seven of them on goal.
- Goalkeeper Allison Deardorff has started in all three games for the Ramblers. Deardorff has allowed two goals on the season, posted nine saves, forced two shutouts, and has a save percentage of .818.
- Loyola-Chicago is outshooting their opponents, 41-27 on the season.
- Jon Sandoval enters his first season as head coach for the Ramblers. Sandoval spent his last five seasons at Northern Michigan University where he was named Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) coach of the year for the second consecutive season in 2024. Grand Valley State is also in the GLIAC, where head coach Dave DiIanni guided them to three NCAA Division II national championships.
- The Ramblers are coming off a 2024 season in which they finished 9-5-5 overall and posted eight of their nine wins at home.
SERIES HISTORY - LOYOLA CHICAGO
The Hawkeyes are 2-2-1 all-time against the Ramblers. The most recent matchup between the two teams came on Sept. 10, 2017, when Iowa fell to Loyola-Chicago, 3-0, at the Iowa Soccer Complex. The first meeting between the two teams came on Oct. 8, 2004, when Iowa fell to Loyola-Chicago, 1-0, on the road. The Hawkeyes are 1-1-1 all-time when traveling to Loyola-Chicago.
SCOUTING THE BILLIKEN
- The Billiken come into the week, 2-1-0 with shutout victories over Kansas City and Missouri. They fell to No. 14 Penn State, 4-1, earlier this season. They host Indiana on Thursday prior to traveling to Iowa City.
- Audrey Smith and Rylee Howard lead Saint Louis with two goals apiece. 
- Saint Louis has put 25-of-39 (.641) shots on goal. They are outshooting opponents, 39-24.
- Emma Parker has started all three games at goalkeeper for the Billiken. Nimu Karani and Parker split time evenly against Kansas City. Karani also came in for the final 15 minutes against Penn State. In their most recent match against Missouri, Parker played the full 90 minutes. Parker has allowed four goals on the season, which all came against Penn State, and has made six saves on the year. Karani is yet to allow a goal and has two saves to show for the year.
- In 2024, Saint Louis finished 15-2-6 including an undefeated, 7-0-3, conference record. They would go on to win the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament before defeating Kansas in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, 1-0. They fell to USC in the Round of 32.
SERIES HISTORY - SAINT LOUIS
Iowa is 4-2-1 all-time against Saint Louis. The Hawkeyes have won three straight matchups against the Billiken with the most recent match coming on Aug. 22, 2021, where Iowa won, 1-0, on the road. The first matchup between the two programs came on Aug. 27, 1999, when Iowa fell to Saint-Louis, 5-3.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- Sofia Bush, Millie Greer, and Liana Tarasco were named Big Ten Players to Watch. The Hawkeyes were picked sixth in the Big Ten Preseason Poll. Bush was also named a midfielder to watch by Top Drawer Soccer.
- The Hawkeyes return last season’s three top goal scorers. Meike Ingles (7), Berit Parten (7), and Sofia Bush (5).
- Iowa is filled with veteran leadership, rostering eight graduate students and three seniors. 
- Iowa’s No. 13 preseason ranking was the highest preseason ranking in program history. It also marked just the second time Iowa earned a preseason ranking.
- The Hawkeyes No. 7 ranking in Top Drawer Soccer’s poll earlier this season marked the highest ranking in program history.
- The Hawkeyes graduated the program’s all-time winningest goalkeeper in Macy Enneking. Enneking defended the goal for Iowa in each of the last three seasons.
- Kenzie Roling, Millie Greer, and Sofia Bush were voted team captains.
DIIANNI EXTENDED
- Head coach Dave DiIanni signed a contract extension on Feb. 27, 2025, that extended the programs all-time winningest coach through 2029.
- Last season, Iowa finished 13th in the country in attendance and second in the Big Ten.
- The Hawkeyes finished the 2024 campaign ranked No. 12 in the United Soccer Coaches poll and No. 14 in Top Drawer Soccer’s poll. The No. 12 postseason ranking was the highest postseason ranking in program history and just the second time the Hawkeyes were ranked in the final poll.
- DiIanni is 3-2 in his Iowa career against opponents ranked sixth or higher. Before his arrival, Iowa was 0-7 in those games and was outscored, 29-4.

HAWKEYE FAITHFUL
- After hosting two home games at Iowa Soccer Complex, Iowa’s average attendance of 2,158 fans ranks eighth in the country and first in the Big Ten.
- Iowa’s home match against TCU marked a regular season crowd attendance record with 2,382 fans.
- The year prior to DiIanni’s arrival, in 2013, the Hawkeyes averaged an attendance of 522 fans per game. Their attendance ranked 76th in the country and eighth in the Big Ten.
2 FOR THE MONEY
Iowa’s record is 57-3-3 in its last 63 games when scoring two goals or more, which dates back to October 2017.

The Hawkeyes will be honoring six seniors prior to the start of the match against Saint Louis.
- Price Loposer, Lexy Griffin, Taylor Kane, Shae Doherty, Morgan Lietz, and Kellen Fife will all be recognized pre-game on Sunday.
FRESH FACES, BIG PLAYS
- Of Iowa’s seven goals on the season, four have come from newcomers. Olivia Lebdaoui (2), Liana Tarasco (1), Josie Jones (1). 
- Of Iowa’s five assists on the year, three have come from newcomers. Elle Wildman (1), Iba Oching (1), and Price Loposer (1).
- Newcomers have combined to play 1,313 minutes this season. 10 newcomers have played in at least one game while six of them have started in at least one game.
2024 MILESTONES
- At 15-3-4 the Hawkeyes tied the program record for most victories in a season. Iowa won 15 games in 2013 and 2019.
- The Hawkeyes finished with four wins against ranked opponents in 2024 which was a program record. Prior to Coach DiIanni’s arrival in 2014, Iowa had a total of nine wins against ranked opponents. In DiIanni’s tenure they have 14.
- Iowa’s eight wins in conference marked a program record for most wins in the Big Ten regular season.
- Iowa advanced to the Sweet 16 for the first time in school history a season ago.
- The Hawkeyes defended their home turf, winning nine games at the Iowa Soccer Complex. The nine wins at home tied a program record.
- Iowa rose to as high as No. 9 in the polls last year, at the time, marking a program record.
SINCE 2019, IOWA...
- Won a pair of Big Ten Tournament Championships in 2021 and 2023
- Won all four NCAA Tournament matches in program history
- Made four out of the five NCAA Tournament appearances in program history
- Advanced to their first Sweet Sixteen in program history
- Has earned 12 postseason wins
- Has posted 53 shutouts
- Defeated 11 ranked opponents, nine top 15 opponents and two top five opponents
- Saw Coach DiIanni surpass 300 career wins and become the winningest coach in program history
- Set a new home attendance record (2,629); the overtime win over Bucknell was the first NCAA Tournament game hosted at the Iowa Soccer Complex
- Set a home average attendance record (1,479); in the 2024 season. Iowa’s attendance in the 2024 season ranked 13th nationally and second amongst Big Ten teams.
