LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Three different Hawkeyes found the back of the cage and goalkeeper Mia Magnotta recorded 10 saves as No. 15 Iowa field hockey earned a 3-1 victory over No. 20 Miami (Ohio) on Friday afternoon at Trager Stadium.
After the RedHawks struck first in the fifth minute, senior Dionne van Aalsum responded less than five minutes later, scoring off a penalty corner with assists from Rachel Herbine and Felicia Zonnenberg. The goal was van Aalsum’s national-leading 12th of the season.
Iowa took control in the third quarter. Milly Short gave the Hawkeyes the lead in the 35th minute, scoring on a penalty corner assisted by Herbine. Just before the third-period horn, Lieve van Kessel added a third goal off a feed from van Aalsum on a corner to extend the Hawkeyes’ advantage.
The Hawkeyes finished with 12 shots and nine penalty corners, while Miami had 18 shots and eight corners.

“That was a fantastic regional win for the Hawks,” said head coach Lisa Cellucci. “We started slow, but I was impressed with the changes we made coming out of halftime. We will regroup and get ready for another great match-up on Sunday.”
