BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — The University of Iowa field hockey team opened conference play with a win as No. 11 Iowa edged Indiana, 3-2, on Friday afternoon at Deborah Tobias Field.
After a scoreless first 25 minutes, Lieve van Kessel opened the scoring in the 26th minute off a penalty corner, flicking in a goal set up by Felicia Zonnenberg. After Indiana’s Charlotte Glasper equalized early in the third, Iowa responded just 28 seconds later with a goal from Dionne van Aalsum, assisted by Fréderique van Cleef.
Van Cleef added a goal of her own in the fourth period, again assisted by Zonnenberg, to give Iowa a 3-1 lead. Indiana’s Mijntje Hagen cut the deficit to one with under four minutes remaining, but the Hawkeyes held on for the win.
Iowa goalkeeper Mia Magnotta recorded four saves, including three in the final period, to preserve the victory. Indiana outshot Iowa 15-10 and held an 8-4 advantage in penalty corners, but the Hawkeyes capitalized on their chances to open Big Ten play 1-0.
OF NOTE
- Van Aalsum leads the nation with 15 goals and has scored in all seven games for the Hawkeyes.
- Zonnenberg recorded her eighth assist of the season. She ranked ninth in the nation in assists per game (1.00) entering the contest.
- Iowa is now 9-3 under head coach Lisa Cellucci in Big Ten openers.
- Iowa improves to 6-1 on the season, while Indiana falls to 4-3.
