BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Fréderique van Cleef scored twice and Dionne van Aalsum added a goal to lead the University of Iowa field hockey team to a 3-1 victory over Indiana on Sunday afternoon at Deborah Tobias Field in a nonconference matchup.
The Hawkeyes (7-1, 1-0) wasted no time getting on the board, scoring just 1:19 into the match. Van Aalsum netted her NCAA leading 15th goal of the season off a penalty corner, assisted by Rachel Herbine and Felicia Zonnenberg.
Van Cleef extended Iowa’s lead in the third quarter with an unassisted goal at the 35:55 mark, her fifth of the season.
Indiana (4-4, 0-1) responded late in the fourth quarter when Celia Arroyo Cabezudo converted a penalty corner at 55:50, assisted by Mijntje Hagen and Ines Garcia Prado. But van Cleef struck again at the final buzzer, scoring her sixth goal of the season to seal the 3-1 win for the Hawkeyes.
Goalkeeper Mia Magnotta recorded six saves, including four in the final period, to preserve the win.
“Great two wins for the Hawks this weekend in Bloomington,” said head coach Lisa Cellucci. “Indiana is a great team and they tested us in a lot ways which will be great as we continue to grow.”
The Hawkeyes return to action in Iowa City on October 3 when they host Northwestern at Grant Field.
