Hawkeyes Open Play at Tennessee National GC

The University of Iowa men’s golf team opened the season at the Visit Knoxville Collegiate on Friday. The Hawkeyes finished the first round six-over par and tied for 13th place.

LOUDON, Tenn. - The University of Iowa men’s golf team opened the season at the Visit Knoxville Collegiate on Friday. The Hawkeyes finished the first round six-over par and tied for 13th place.

Junior Max Tjoa carded a two-under-par 32 on the front nine, highlighted by four birdies. He added two more birdies on the back side to close with a three-under-par 67, placing him inside the top 10 in eighth place after round one.

Redshirt Freshman Grant Gudgel turned in Iowa’s second-best score with a one-over-par 71. Gudgel birdied three holes and post an even-par 36 on the back. After the first round, the Stillwater, Oklahoma native sits in a tie for 40th.

Freshman Bennett Warren is tied for 53th following an opening-round two-over par 72. Warren birdied the first hole and added three more on the back side to shoot 35 coming in.

Sophomore Chance Rinkol carded a six-over 76, while senior Gage Messingham finished with an eight-over 78 to round out the Hawkeye lineup.

Max played a very solid round of golf. He’s playing with a lot of confidence and it showed today. As a team we were one score away from a pretty decent round. We made far too many bogies considering the soft conditions. We need to clean those mistakes up tomorrow."
