Hawkeyes Shut Down Stags

No. 11 Iowa (8-0) defeated Fairfield (4-2) on Sunday afternoon at Carver Hawkeye Arena, 86-72.

IOWA CITY, Iowa - No. 11 Iowa (8-0) defeated Fairfield (4-2) on Sunday afternoon inside Carver Hawkeye Arena, 86-72.   

Sophomore Ava Heiden led Iowa with her fifth double-double of the season, notching 18 points, 16 rebounds, a career-high four assists and four blocks. Graduate student Kylie Feuerbach tied her career-high with 17 points. 

Fairfield came out strong in the first quarter with a 17-9 run in the first five minutes, giving Iowa its largest deficit of the season. Iowa collected 12-of-17 first quarter points in the paint with four of those coming from senior Hannah Stuelke. The Hawkeyes defense shut down the Stags, leaving them scoreless in the last four minutes, ending the first quarter down by five only points.  

The Hawkeyes responded in the second quarter, making four consecutive baskets to tie it 24-24, forcing a Fairfield timeout. Senior Taylor McCabe drained two of the Hawkeyes four three-point baskets in the quarter to lead the team with six points. Iowa’s defense was able to force five turnovers. Freshman Addie Deal had two steals in the second and drained five points in the last minute to send Iowa into halftime up, 41-35. 

Coming out of halftime, it was a defensive battle on both sides of the ball. The Stags were held to just 30.8 percent field goal shooting and 33.3 percent from three. Iowa also forced two shot clock violations to turn the momentum. Sophomore Taylor Stremlow had four of Iowa’s nine rebounds in the quarter and one assist. The Hawkeyes were able to extend their lead to 56-45 at the end of the quarter.  

Two Hawkeyes dominated the final quarter to help secure a Hawkeye win. Feuerbach drained three deep treys in the fourth, to tie her career-high in points. Heiden found nine points of her own with two baskets in the paint and five from the free throw line.  

INDIVIDUAL NOTES
Ava Heiden registered her fifth double-double with 18 points, 16 rebounds, and career-high four assists.
- Heiden is the seventh Hawkeye since 2009 to record 15+ points and 15+ rebounds in a single game.  
- It was Heiden’s seventh game of the season in double figures.
- Hannah Stuelke notched 13 points, eight rebounds, three assists, and a steal.
- It was her 68th career game in double digits, the most among any active Hawkeye. 
- Addie Deal had nine points and a career-high three steals.
- Taylor Stremlow stuffed the stat sheet with nine points, a career-high seven assists, and seven rebounds.
- Stremlow made her third start this season.
- Kylie Feuerbach tied her career-high with 17 points. (4-7 3FG)
- Taylor McCabe added 13 points on four 3-point field goals.
- McCabe has reached double figures in three consecutive games and for the 17th time in her career.
- Journey Houston recorded a career-high seven points, six rebounds, and three assists.

- Iowa is 8-0 for the fifth time in program history.
- Iowa is 8-0 for the second consecutive year for the first time in program history.
- The Hawkeyes have played in front of 41 consecutive sellouts which is the longest active streak nationally.
- Iowa is 16-1 when scoring 80+ points in the Jan Jensen era.
- Iowa is 101-6 when scoring 80+ points and dishing out 20+ assists in the same game since 2018-19.
- Jensen’s Hawkeyes are undefeated in the month of November for the second consecutive season.
