Hawkeyes Break CHA Record, Downing Evansville 119-43

The nationally ranked Iowa women’s basketball team dominated Evansville, 119-43, inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Sunday afternoon.

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The nationally ranked Iowa women’s basketball team dominated Evansville, 119-43, inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Sunday afternoon. The Hawkeyes set an arena and program record with 119 points. It was also the largest margin of victory in school history.

The Hawkeyes came out strong in the first quarter, going on a 9-0 run in the first two minutes. Iowa went on to shoot 44 percent from three and 57 percent overall in the quarter. The team drained three consecutive three-point baskets forcing the Purple Aces to take a timeout mid-quarter before finishing out on a 15-3 run. Iowa’s defense held Evansville to just 10 points in the quarter. 

Iowa’s offense continued to dominate the second quarter, heading into half with a comfortable, 59-22 lead. Senior Taylor McCabe led the Hawkeye scoring, going 2-for-2 with two threes and one rebound. Sophomore Taylor Stremlow and freshman Layla Hays followed with five points each and a combined two assists. The Hawkeyes shot 60 percent from three and overall to close out the half.  

Eight different Hawkeyes scored in the third quarter for a collective 31 points, putting Iowa up, 90-30. The Hawkeyes scored 11 points on six forced defensive turnovers. Freshman Addie Deal’s quick pace added seven points to Iowa’s tally. The bench was a significant factor adding 18 points in the third.  

Iowa closed out the game with a 26-13 run to secure an overwhelming Hawkeye win. Sophomore Chit-Chat Wright collected her 10th assist in the first minute of the fourth quarter to register her first double-double as a Hawkeye. Iowa’s 119-point performance was the most points scored in a single game by the Hawkeyes.  

Hays led Iowa with 20 points and five rebounds, while sophomore Ava Heiden added a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

INDIVIDUAL NOTES
- Ava Heiden notched her second career double-double in as many games with 14 points and 10 rebounds. 
- Chit-Chat Wright recorded her first career double-double with 16 points (4-5 3FG) and 10 assists. Wright notched career-highs in points, 3-pointers, and assists.
- In just two games with Iowa, Wright has dished out 17 assists which is the most of any two-game stretch in her career.
- Wright tied her career best with seven assists and only one turnover in the first half.
- Hannah Stuelke finished with 13 points (6-7 FG), six rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
- It was her 63rd career game in double digits, the most among any active Hawkeye.
- Taylor McCabe went 4-of-7 from 3-point range. She has made four or more 3-pointers in 11 career games.
- Layla Hays scored 20+ points for the first time in her career.

TEAM NOTES
- The Hawkeyes set the arena and program record for most points in a single game.
- It was the largest win margin in program history.
- Iowa extended its home sell out streak to 38 games which is the longest active streak nationally. 
- It was Iowa's 38th time scoring 100 or more points in program history.
- The Hawkeyes are 4-0 all-time against Evansville.
- Iowa is 98-6 when recording 80+ points and 20+ assists in a game since 2018-19.
- The Hawkeyes eclipsed 30+ assists for the 13th time in program history since 2009.
- Four of Iowa’s five starters reached double figures by the end of the third quarter.
- Iowa led the contest for 39:08.
