BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The University of Iowa women’s basketball team edged Indiana, 56-53, in a Big Ten matchup on Sunday inside Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.
Junior Hannah Stuelke led the Hawkeyes with a double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing 12 rebounds, while adding three steals and two blocks. Sophomore Ava Heiden finished with 13 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore Chit-Chat Wright contributed 13 points and four steals, and senior Taylor McCabe knocked down two key triples for six points. Iowa’s defense forced 14 Indiana turnovers and held the Hoosiers to a season-low four points in the third quarter.
Indiana controlled the first half, jumping out to a 20-8 lead al behind Shay Ciezki’s eight points. The Hoosiers extended their advantage to 35-19 at halftime, outrebounding the Hawkeyes, 23-17 and dominating the paint with 20 points.
The game flipped in the third quarter as Iowa went on a 17-0 run, outscoring Indiana 19-4 in the frame. McCabe and graduate student Kylie Feuerbach combined for three threes and Stuelke added two layups in the run. Iowa’s defense limited Indiana to 15.4 percent shooting in the quarter and forcing five turnovers.
In the final period, the teams traded leads. Wright’s jumper gave Iowa its first lead at 9:05, and Stuelke’s layup with 1:02 remaining pushed the margin to three. Wright sealed the win at the free-throw line with two makes in the closing seconds. Iowa finished with 30 points in the paint and converted 14 points on fast breaks, while Indiana was held to just 2-of-19 from beyond the arc.
