IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa student-athletes Bennett Stirtz (men’s basketball) and Hannah Stuelke (women’s basketball) were named December Student-Athletes of the Month, the Iowa Student-Athlete Advisory Committee announced Wednesday.
Stirtz, a senior guard from Liberty Missouri, played a key role in leading the Hawkeye men’s basketball team to a 4-2 record during the month of December. He averaged 15.3 points, 5.0 assists, 2.0 rebounds, and 1.8 steals per game while shooting 49.3 percent from the field and 37.1 percent from three-point range. Stirtz posted two 20-point performances during the month, including a 25-point outing on 10-of-17 shooting with four three-pointers in Iowa’s win over Maryland. He also tallied 22 points and eight assists in the victory over UMass Lowell. He reached 500 career assists as a Hawkeye in that outing.
Stuelke, a senior forward from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, led the Hawkeyes to a pair of Big Ten victories over Rutgers and Penn State during December. She averaged a team-high 15.0 points and 8.4 rebounds per game for the month, registering double figures in four of Iowa’s five contests. Stuelke recorded a season-high 31 points against Lindenwood and pulled down a season-best 15 rebounds in Iowa’s matchup at No. 10 Iowa State.
The women’s basketball team heads to College Park to face No. 15 Maryland on Thursday, January 22, at 5 p.m., while the men return to Carver–Hawkeye Arena on Wednesday, January 28, at 6 p.m. to take on USC.
