Former Hawkeye, Jack Campbell, Named 2025 Pro Butkus Award Recipient

Detroit Lions linebacker and former University of Iowa unanimous consensus All-American Jack Campbell is the recipient of the 2025 Pro Butkus Award, receiving the NFL’s top linebacker honor.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Detroit Lions linebacker and former University of Iowa unanimous consensus All-American Jack Campbell was surprised with the 2025 Pro Butkus Award, receiving the NFL’s top linebacker honor in his hometown of Cedar Falls, Iowa. Campbell was presented the award by Matt Butkus, son of the award’s namesake, the late Dick Butkus, in recognition of a breakout season anchoring one of the league’s most physical defenses.

Campbell played a pivotal role for the NFC-contending Detroit Lions, showcasing the instincts, toughness and leadership that define elite linebacking play. The third-year linebacker emerged as a cornerstone of Detroit’s defense, consistently impacting the game against the run and in coverage while serving as a steady on-field communicator.

The 6-foot-5, 249-pound linebacker finished the season with 176 total tackles (89 solo), five sacks, three forced fumbles and two recoveries with nine tackles for loss appearing in 17 games. A former first-round draft pick from the University of Iowa, Campbell quickly translated his collegiate dominance into NFL production, earning league-wide respect for his preparation, physicality and football intelligence.

The Butkus Award Selection Committee said, Jack Campbell embodies everything the Butkus Award represents. His size, instincts and disciplined approach to the position allow him to control the middle of the field. He plays with authority, communicates at a high level, and consistently puts himself in position to make impactful plays. His rise this season reflects not just talent, but leadership and football character.”

Campbell edged a strong field of finalists that included Fred Warner (San Francisco 49ers), last year’s winner Zack Baun (Philadelphia Eagles) and former winner Roquan Smith (Baltimore Ravens).

Campbell became the first Hawkeye to win the Butkus Award in college for his accomplishments as a senior in 2022.

The Butkus Award selection committee focuses on qualities that defined Dick Butkus’ career: toughness, on-field leadership, competitiveness, football character and linebacking skills.
