Hawkeyes Cruise Past Purdue

No. 13 Iowa (21-5, 12-3) defeated Purdue (12-13, 4-11) inside Mackey Arena on Thursday night, 83-74.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - No. 13 Iowa (21-5, 12-3) defeated Purdue (12-13, 4-11) inside Mackey Arena on Thursday night, 83-74. 
 
Sophomores Ava Heiden and Taylor Stremlow led the day for the Hawkeyes. Stremlow notched a career-high 19 points (7-of-10), all scored in the first half as well as eight assists. Heiden collected her seventh career double-double with 21points (10-of-12) and 13 rebounds on the day.  

Three different players combined for the first 17 of Iowa’s quarter points. Stremlow led the quarter with 10 points and one assist. Iowa's defense was able to capitalize seven points on four Purdue turnovers. The Hawkeyes closed out the first quarter on a 10-0 run, leading, 29-14.  

Senior Kylie Feuerbach started the second quarter draining back-to-back three-pointers for the Hawkeyes. Five of Iowa’s eight field goals in the quarter came from beyond the arc, as five different Hawkeyes aided to the scoring. Iowa pulled down 10 quarter rebounds and heading into half up, 51-32.  

Heiden came out of half and got it done in the paint. Heiden went 5-for-5, scoring ten of Iowa’s 15 third quarter points. The Hawkeyes were able to force two more Purdue turnovers and bring down eight more rebounds. The Boilermakers were able to cut the lead, but Iowa hung onto a 66-52 edge at the end of the third.   

The Hawkeyes kept it rolling to close out an 83-74 victory. Freshman Journey Houston notched eight points in the fourth quarter, adding to her total of 16 on the day to tie her career high. Iowa forced a total of 13 turnovers on the day and held Purdue to just 42.4 percent from the field. 

INDIVIDUAL NOTES
- Taylor Stremlow notched 19 points (5-6 3FG), eight assists, and three rebounds.
- Stremlow registered her career-high for the second consecutive game with 4:36 to go in the second quarter. (19)
- Over the last two games, Stremlow is 8-of-10 from 3-point range.
- She also tied her career-high in assists. 
- Stremlow made her third consecutive start and 10th of the year. 
- The Hawkeyes are 10-0 in such games when Stremlow is in the starting lineup this season.  
- Ava Heiden recorded 21 points (10-12 FG), 13 rebounds, three assists, and three steals. 
- It was Heiden’s seventh career double-double and third with 20+ points. 
- Heiden has reached double figures in 14 straight games and against all 14 Big Ten opponents played this season.
- Heiden has scored 20+ points a team-best nine times this season. 
- Chit-Chat Wright had six points and seven assists. 
- It was Wright’s fourth game of the last five with 7+ assists. 
- Journey Houston recorded 16 points, five rebounds, and two assists. 
- Houston tied her career-high in points. 
- All of Houston’s seven career games in double figures have come against Big Ten competition. 
- Houston made her first career start as a Hawkeye with Hannah Stuelke sidelined with an upper body injury. 
- Kylie Feuerbach registered 10 points and two assists.
- Feuerbach has two or more 3-point field goals five times this season and has reached double figures in four games.

TEAM NOTES
- Iowa started two freshmen and two sophomores for the first time in the Jan Jensen era.
- It was Iowa’s youngest starting lineup since Caitlin Clark (Fr.), Gabbie Marshall (So.), Kate Martin (RS-So.), and McKenna Warnock (So.) started against UConn in the Sweet 16 on March 27, 2021. (169 games)
