NORMAL, Ill. The University of Iowa baseball team defeated Illinois State, 11–0, on Tuesday night at Duffy Bass Field.

"It was a nice team win tonight," said head coach Rick Heller. "The pitching staff did an awesome job. Eight guys combined for a three hit shutout. We led from the 1st, but It was a tight game until the 7th when our offense broke out for eight runs in the final three innings. It was a great way to start our week."

The Hawkeyes scored in the opening inning as senior Gable Mitchell drew a leadoff walk and later came home on a wild pitch to give Iowa an early lead.

Iowa added to its advantage in the fourth inning when senior Caleb Wulf singled through the left side. Freshman Carter Geffre followed with a walk, and redshirt junior Kellen Strohmeyer drove in Wulf with a single to second base.

The Hawkeyes continued to build momentum in the fifth. Mitchell singled to left field and scored on Wulf’s single up the middle to extend the lead.

Mitchell sparked another scoring surge in the seventh with a single to third base. Senior Miles Risley followed with a two-run home run to left-center to make it a 5–0 game.

Iowa broke the game open in the eighth inning. Senior Joey Nerat drew a walk, stole third and scored on a throwing error. Senior Jaylen Ziegler entered as a pinch runner and later scored on a wild pitch. Strohmeyer added a single to left field, and Mitchell drove him in with a sacrifice fly to right. Risley capped the inning with a bunt single that scored senior Kooper Schulte.

The Hawkeyes tacked on two more runs in the ninth as Strohmeyer and Schulte each drove in a run.
