IOWA CITY, Iowa -- University of Iowa’s Emmanuel Njoku and Prior Ochonogor earned Big Ten Outdoor Athlete of the Week honors, the league announced Wednesday afternoon.
Njoku, a freshman from Benin City, Nigeria, earned co-field athlete honors following an impressive opening weekend at the UCF Black & Gold Invitational. He captured the long jump title and currently ranks No. 1 in the nation with a wind-aided mark of 7.95 meters. Njoku enters the outdoor season after earning second-team All-America honors in the men’s long jump, placing 14th in his NCAA Indoor Championships debut.
Ochonogor, a senior from Benin City, Nigeria, was named the Big Ten Track Athlete of the Week after winning the 400-meter hurdles at the UCF Black & Gold Invitational with a time of 50.20. He currently ranks No. 1 in the NCAA Division I in the event after setting a personal best in his outdoor season opener. Ochonogor also moved to No. 7 on Iowa’s all-time list with his mark.
The Hawkeyes return to action across the country beginning April 1 at the Texas Relays. From April 2–4, the track and field team will continue competition at the Texas Relays and compete at the Bobcat Invitational, Stanford Invitational, Florida Relays and the Mike Fanelli Track Classic.
