IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa softball team went 0-2 on day two of the Dr. Christine Grant Classic at Bob Pearl Field, falling 8-0 in six innings to Georgia Tech in game one before dropping a 3-2 extra-inning decision to South Dakota State in game two.
Game 1
Georgia Tech struck first in the opening inning, plating one run. The Yellow Jackets added four more in the third inning on back-to-back home runs to extend the lead to 5-0.
In the fifth, Georgia Tech hit another home run to add two more runs. The Yellow Jackets secured the 8-0 run-rule victory with a solo home run in the sixth inning.
Game 2
South Dakota State took an early lead in the first inning, capitalizing on a leadoff double to go ahead 1-0.
The Hawkeyes responded in the fifth. Devin Simon led off with a single, and Tory Bennett reached on a fielding error. After a sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position, Nailyn Marshall delivered a two-out single to center field, driving in both runs to give Iowa a 2-1 lead.
The Jackrabbits answered in the eighth inning with a solo home run to secure the 3-2 victory.
Carly Brewer got the start in the circle, pitching six innings and recording one strikeout. The freshman limited opposing hitters to a .227 batting average.
