THE FIELD
Iowa is set to compete against a strong field: #2 Virginia, #3 Florida, #34 Louisville, #43 Purdue, #47 South Florida, Miami (OH), and Eastern Michigan.
- Florida has won the Calusa Cup in each of the past two seasons and will look to defend its title.
TOURNAMENT HISTORY
This marks the sixth consecutive year the Hawkeyes have hosted the Calusa Cup at Calusa Pines Golf Club.
- Iowa's best team finish in Naples is seventh in 2023 and 2021.
- Last season, the Hawkeyes had two top-25 finishers. Gage Messingham placed 19th with a three-over-par 219, and Ryan Shellberg finished 24th at seven-over-par 223.
- In 2021, Alex Schaake tied for fifth place after shooting 215 (-1). He closed the tournament with a third-round 67 (-5), finishing ahead of two top-10 ranked golfers.
HURDZAN-FRY TIES
Calusa Pines was designed by Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry, a design partnership behind many elite courses across the United States, and particularly the Midwest. US Open site Erin Hills in Erin, Wisconsin, is another notable Hurdzan-Fry collaboration. Fry's firm also designed the new McCarty Short Game Facility at Iowa's Hoak Family Golf Complex in Iowa City.
THE COURSE
Calusa Pines distinguishes itself from its brethren because it goes to excess, some would say; but in such a subtle way that it becomes memorable. Named among the prestigious "Top Ten Best New Private Clubs" in the United States according to Golf Digest, Calusa Pines features outstanding vistas generated by sweeping ridges that influences ten golf holes. The landforms are so soft and flowing that they blend in well enough to appear natural and unique. Combined with extensive native plant vegetation it is difficult to imagine the golf course was built, instead of simply laid out on this superb piece of land.
