AMES, Iowa — The University of Iowa softball team claimed game two of the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series with a 7-2 victory over Iowa State on Tuesday at the Cyclone Sports Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hawkeyes scored early and often against the Cyclones. Iowa opened the scoring in the second inning when Leah McAnally and Nailyn Marshall worked back-to-back walks, setting the stage for Phoenyx Silva’s three-run home run, her second of the season, to give Iowa a 3-0 lead.

Iowa added to its advantage in the third inning as Kiara Sipe launched a solo home run to extend the lead to 4-0.

In the fifth, the Hawkeyes pushed their lead further. With two runners on and two outs, McAnally sent a three-run home run over the left field wall to make it a 7-0 game.

Iowa State got on the board in the bottom half of the fifth inning, scoring one run on a bases loaded double play. The Cyclones added another run in the sixth to make it a 7-2 contest.

Serayah Neiss delivered a strong performance in the circle for the Hawkeyes. Neiss earned her 11th win of the season, tossing six innings while allowing two runs and striking out one.

HEAR FROM HEAD COACH STACY MAY-JOHNSON
This was the first decisive win we’ve had in a while,” said head coach Stacy May-Johnson. “The way we’ve pitched these last four games is the best we’ve pitched all year. It’s nice to see it all come together down the stretch, especially with some big games ahead. I’m really pleased with the big hits. Silva hits the ball as hard as anyone on the team, Sipe is doing what she’s done all year and McAnally gave us a huge three-run swing.”

NOTABLES

  • McAnally and Silva each recorded three RBIs.
  • McAnally’s seventh home run of the season tied her career high, and she now sits one RBI shy of 100 for her career.
  • The Hawkeyes batted .286 as a team.
  • Neiss is 12 strikeouts away from reaching 400 in her career.
