IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa softball team defeated Purdue, 8-7, on Friday evening at Bob Pearl Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Purdue struck first in the opening frame with a solo home run.
The Hawkeyes responded in the bottom of the inning. Devin Simon singled, and Tory Bennett reached after being hit by a pitch. Mariah Myers followed with a double, driving in Simon and Bennett. Kiara Sipe was hit by a pitch, and Nailyn Marshall doubled to bring home Myers and Sipe. Brianna Johnson and McKenzie Leitgen added consecutive singles, allowing Marshall and Johnson to score and giving Iowa a 6-1 lead.
Purdue answered with a run in the third and tied the game in the fourth with a three-run home run.
The Hawkeyes regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth on a solo home run by Leah McAnally. Marshall reached on a fielding error, and Johnson grounded out to third, advancing her into scoring position. Leitgen followed with an RBI single to score Marshall and make it 8-6.
The Boilermakers cut the deficit to one in the sixth.
Purdue managed to load the bases in the seventh, Devin Bowman and Anna Streff alertly caught a Boilermaker leaving third base early from the dugout, leading to an overturned call that secured the Iowa victory.

“The players of the game were Anna Streff and Devin Bowman” May-Johnson said. “They have called about four or five runners leaving early and have been right every single time. They’ve honestly given us two or three additional wins this season because of it. We got tonight and we’re going to come back out tomorrow. Purdue’s going to come back fiery tomorrow but so are we.”

- McAnally’s home run was her eighth of the season, a career high.
- Serayah Neiss pitched a complete game with two strikeouts and is six shy of 400 for her career.
