Hawkeyes Conclude Play at Big Ten Championships

NORTH PLAINS, Ore. – The University of Iowa men’s golf team finished play at the Big Ten Championships on Sunday. The Hawkeyes placed 15th at 36-over par after shooting a 295 (+15) in the final round. No. 33 UCLA claimed the team title at eight-under par, while UCLA’s Josh Kim earned individual medalist honors at eight-under.

“It was a tough day for us,” said head coach Tyler Stith. “I’m disappointed to finish the tournament and the season like that. I know the guys are disappointed as well.  We couldn’t sustain any momentum in our rounds. We made a lot of birdies this week, but we gave away far too many strokes. We need to learn and improve at doing the simple things better. That’s the gap. We’re a very young team. Everyone will be back next year ready to take another step forward.”

Freshman Bennett Warren led the Hawkeyes, finishing in a tie for 34th at six-over par. The Olathe, Kansas, native shot three-over in his final round, highlighted by an eagle on his second hole, one of just 10 eagles recorded during the tournament. Warren’s 13 birdies over the weekend tied for the fourth most in the field.

Redshirt freshman Grant Gudgel tied for 47th at eight-over par after carding a five-over round on Sunday.

Junior Max Tjoa tied for 65th at 12-over par, shooting nine-over in the final round. Sophomore Ryan Shellberg finished in a tie for 72nd at 14-over par. The Prosper, Texas, native posted Iowa’s low round of the day at one-over par.

Redshirt freshman Jack McCarty rounded out the Hawkeye lineup, finishing 81st at 23-over par.
